'infamy! infamy! they all have it in for me!' (an alternative history)
So Tony Blair's proposals to hold terror suspects for up to ninety days without charge have been defeated. Instead the House of Commons approved a proposal to keep them for 28 days. What are the implications for this? Following is an actual conversation that never happened except where many of these things tend to happen-in my head.
Reporter: We are standing outside the house of commons where Tony Blair has just been decisively defeated. There's an MP standing next to me with a look that speaks a thousand words. Still, we have to interview him. MP of Bonkers, how are you feeling today?
MP: Joy! Relief! We have brought the great man down to his knees! We want more blood and we want it now!
Reporter: Specifically who's blood are we referring to...
MP: Tony's! Cheri's! Anybodys! O Dracula how right you were. The children of the night make such sweet sounds and...
Reporter: Erm...our honourable member of parliament for Bonkers is evidently speaking metaphorically. His views do not represent those of the BBC or anyone not closely associated with vampires and death cults.
Reporter 2: Is it my imagination or is he now being nibbled to death by three grey squirrels?
Reporter: This is parliament, John. These things happen. Tell me what do you think this means for Tony Blair? Does it leave him in the mire?
Reporter2: Where is that? Essex?
Reporter: Right here is another MP coming out, I think he represents Labour. If I'm not mistaken this is the MP for Denial. Mr MP what does this all mean?
MP for denial: What- you mean life, the universe and everything? I'd hate to go into all that right now...
Reporter: Oh no- the BBC cleared up that problem ages ago. I'm talking about this momentous defeat for Tony Blair. Is he going to retreat into his room and cry like the big baby we think he might be?
MP for denial: That is utter rubbish. This was not really a defeat. We are simply retreating in another direction. This is not going to hurt Tony Blair, but it will hurt the tories, the entire country and even the black people. This is the worst day in the history of the country. Blair also wishes to remind the country that he will continue to due his duty- Cherie will still get it five times tonight as she always does, make no mistake.
Reporter: There is a tory MP coming out now and he looks suspiciously like the MP for ave-it. let's see if he is foaming at the mouth yet. Well he is, but we might be able to get a word or two out of him anyway.
MP for ave-it: Well today was possibly the greatest day of my life! We stood down Tony Blair and we gave him a real kick in the privates. Indeed to see his face when the results were read out was to see the face of Scipio when Hannibal crossed the alps with his elephants and...
MP for denial: Elephants? In the House of Commons? Do you mean Ken Clarke?
MP for ave-it:....took on the mighty Romans with his diminished force! Well today we did not have elephants and we did not have an elite group of African mercenaries prepared to attack the flanks, but we had something much more important- integrity, courage and a heavy lunch.
Reporter: So there you have it. In the shadow of Westminster today, a revolution has occured and Tony Blair is on his knees. Will he go gently into that goodnight? or is it still early doors? Is he ready for his close-up? It's hard to tell, but the symbolism of the grey squirrels that attacked MP's today will be hard to miss. Reporting from Westminster, this is Fullof Shite.
